A hair transplant consultation at Nova Medical Miami can start in one of two ways: online, with photos and a video call, or in person at our clinic in Aventura. Either way it is free, and it ends with a written plan and per-graft quote you can take away and think about. The online route suits people who want an early answer first or who live outside South Florida; the in-person visit gives the fullest picture of your scalp. To book either one, use our contact page.
This guide walks through both routes, what is checked, what you receive and the questions to bring. It focuses on our own process; vetting several clinics side by side is a separate job, covered in how to choose a hair transplant clinic.
The short version: start online or in person, share your history and goals, have your thinning and donor hair assessed, then receive a written plan with a graft estimate and quote. There is no cost and no obligation to book.
Online or In Person: Choosing How to Start
Both routes lead to the same written plan; the difference is how much can be assessed at the first contact. Many patients start online and then confirm the details in person before booking.
| Point | Online (photos and video call) | In person in Aventura |
| Good for | A first opinion, busy schedules, out-of-town patients | The fullest assessment and a hairline drawn on your scalp |
| What is assessed | Pattern and stage from photos, history, goals | Scalp and donor area up close, hair quality, skin |
| What you get | An early view and an estimated range | A confirmed graft estimate and written quote |
| Next step | In-person check before or on procedure day | Booking, if you decide to go ahead |
Starting Online: Photos and a Video Call
An online consultation starts with a few clear photos you send ahead. Daylight from a window works well; shoot with your hair dry and brushed off the forehead, then add each temple, a view from directly above and one of the crown. A photo of the back and sides helps the team estimate your donor area.
On the video call, the team asks about your hair loss history, any treatments you have used and what you most want to change, and talks through realistic options. If a transplant looks likely to suit you, you get an early idea of the approach and a likely range. Final numbers are confirmed once your scalp has been examined in person.
The video call is also a good time to ask practical questions: how long the in-person visit takes, whether a partner or family member can join, and what you should and should not do with your hair before the appointment. Most people find that one short call answers many of the worries that kept them from booking.
The In-Person Visit in Aventura
The in-person visit is where your scalp is examined closely. The team looks at how far the thinning has progressed, whether hairs in the thinning areas are miniaturizing, how dense and healthy your donor hair is, and the texture and color contrast of your hair, which affect how far each graft goes.
When surgery fits, you see a suggested front edge drawn on the skin and look at it together in a mirror, and the team marks out the areas that would receive grafts. When it does not fit yet, you hear the reasons and the alternatives worth trying first. Our guide to who is a good candidate explains the factors involved. Dr. Adam Rubinstein, MD FACS reviews and approves every plan, and the surgical team carries out each procedure under the doctor's oversight.
Planning Around South Florida Life
A good consultation also covers how a procedure fits your routine. In South Florida that usually means sun, water and heat. The first weeks after surgery call for keeping strong sun off the scalp, pausing swimming in pools and the ocean until your instructions allow it, and avoiding heavy sweating from outdoor workouts or yard work.
Because of that, many patients choose a procedure date with an eye on their calendar: a quieter month, a stretch without beach plans or boat trips, or a period when wearing a loose hat outdoors will feel natural. Bring up anything coming up in the next few months, such as weddings, trips or events with photos, so the team can suggest timing that keeps the most visible weeks out of the way.
Consultations for Women and Repair Patients
Women and people unhappy with an earlier transplant follow the same steps, with a few extra checks. For women, the pattern of thinning is looked at closely, since diffuse thinning across the scalp can change whether a transplant is the right step. For repair patients, records from the first procedure and photos from each stage help the team understand what was done and how much donor hair is left. In both cases the aim is the same: an honest answer about what will help before any plan is written.
What Your Written Plan Covers
Your written plan sets out what is proposed in plain terms, giving you something concrete to weigh at home. It typically includes:
- Graft estimate: a total, broken down by the areas being treated.
- Method: which of FUE, FUT or implanter-pen placement fits your hair, with the reasoning.
- Sessions: whether the plan fits in one day, with up to about 4,000 grafts possible depending on donor density, or is better split in two.
- Donor reserve: how much is kept back for the future.
- Quote: per-graft pricing from $3.99 to $7.99, with most procedures between $4,000 and $15,000, no session fees and 0% financing for the first 12 months.
- Timeline and follow-up: when growth usually shows, and 12 months of follow-up after the procedure.
For the factors behind a quote, see hair transplant pricing explained.
Questions Worth Asking
A few questions tend to give the most useful answers. Bring them written down:
- Is my hair loss still active, and does that change the timing?
- How many grafts will I need, and how much donor hair will be left?
- What will the area look like in South Florida sun during the first weeks?
- When can I swim or go to the beach again?
- Who carries out each step on the day, and who oversees it?
- What happens at follow-up visits, and can some be done online?
Coming From Outside Miami
Many patients travel from elsewhere in Florida or further away. For them, starting online saves a trip, and the in-person check can often be arranged close to the procedure date. Complimentary transportation to and from the clinic is available for patients who travel. Our out-of-town patients page explains how visits are planned, from airports to recovery days.
After the Consultation
After your consultation, the decision is yours to make at home, on your own schedule, with nothing booked on the day. If you go ahead, a date is set and you receive written preparation instructions well in advance. If you would like to know more about the clinic and team first, our article inside Nova Medical Miami gives a look behind the scenes.
The clinic is open Monday to Saturday, 7:30am to 10pm, which makes it easier to fit a consultation around work.
