The donor zone is then carefully stitched back together, and the sutures are typically removed within 7-10 days. Because the hair above and below the donor area is left untrimmed, the incision line is nearly invisible after the procedure.
Once the donor strip has been removed, it is slivered under a microscope into individual follicular unit grafts for transplantation. How Long Does FUT Take?
Plan on spending most of a day at our Aventura clinic. Removing the strip takes only 10-15 minutes, but dividing it into grafts and placing each one takes hours, and the more grafts your plan calls for, the longer the day runs.
Given that the procedure often takes a significant portion of the day, you will be provided with meals, snacks, and plenty of breaks throughout. How Your FUT Scar Stays Concealed

How to Prepare for an FUT Hair Transplant

Medicines & Vitamins
Bring a list of everything you take, including over-the-counter vitamins and supplements. Anything that affects bleeding is reviewed, and you will be told clearly which items to pause and for how long before surgery.

Alcohol & Nicotine
Stop drinking and smoking for at least a week before your FUT date. Both can increase bleeding or reduce blood flow to the scalp, which slows healing of the donor line and the grafts.

Surgery Morning
Wash your hair that morning and skip styling products. Wear a shirt that buttons or zips at the front, and arrange for someone to drive you home, since you should not drive after the medication given during the procedure.
FUT Recovery Timeline
- Day 1
You go home with written aftercare, a care package and your medication. Expect some tightness along the donor line that first evening.
- Days 2-4
Gentle hair washing can usually begin. Swelling may spread to the forehead and around the eyes for a few days before it fades.
- Days 5-6
Swelling settles and the scabs around the grafts start to loosen. Most people feel ready for desk work again.
- Days 7-10
A brief follow-up at the clinic takes care of suture removal, and light exercise is usually fine from here.
- Weeks 2-4

Some swelling may follow the transplant and can extend to the forehead, eyelids, and even the cheeks. It can cause a slightly puffy look for a few days, but it is a common and expected effect and no cause for concern. Scabs and crusts form around the grafts, and keeping the graft areas clean and moist is important, with gentle hair washing usually starting within one to two days. The scabs generally fall off within the first week. A week away from in-person work is common. Light exercise can resume after 7-10 days, while strenuous activity and swimming should wait 2-3 weeks.
As the day ends, the team goes over post-procedure care instructions in detail, including care of the donor and recipient areas and your prescribed medications. You will receive a care package with written instructions, gauze, and pads. Please arrange for someone to drive you home, since driving after prescription medication is not recommended.
