Before the Procedure

As is customary with any surgical procedure at Nova Medical Hair Transplant, you will partake in a thorough preoperative consultation and consent procedure. The aims and objectives of your treatment strategy will be outlined, and you will receive precise pre and post-operative guidelines designed to ensure your well-being and minimize the occurrence of complications throughout your FUT procedure.

Day of Surgery

On the day of your procedure, you will have a consultation with the surgeon to review the objectives and plan. The recipient region will be marked, and pre-operative photos will be taken. Subsequently, mild oral sedation will be administered, and the donor region will be prepped. In the case of FUT surgery in Miami, only the designated hair for harvesting will be trimmed, and the area will be numbed using local anesthesia. During the numbing process, you will be positioned face down on a table resembling a massage table. This stage might cause slight discomfort for a few moments, but most patients find it manageable.

After the area is adequately anesthetized, the surgeon will extract the donor strip in a process typically lasting 10-15 minutes, during which you will not experience pain or discomfort. The donor area will then be meticulously closed using our “trichophytic” technique, which often results in a subtle, hard-to-detect donor site scar.

Given that the procedure often takes a significant portion of the day, you will be provided with meals, snacks, and ample breaks throughout. As the day ends, the team will review post-procedure care instructions in detail with you. You will receive guidance on caring for both the donor and recipient areas, and your prescribed medications will be discussed. A care package containing written instructions, gauze, and pads will be provided. We advise arranging for someone to drive you home since operating a vehicle after receiving prescription medication is not recommended.

FUT Recovery

The recovery process after hair transplantation is generally straightforward. Patients are typically prescribed a one-week course of antibiotics to prevent infections, along with medication to minimize swelling. Discomfort after the procedure is usually mild and can be managed using over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Advil). However, we also provide a prescription for stronger pain medication for those who require it. Detailed instructions on caring for the donor and recipient areas, as well as hair washing guidelines, will be given. Patients who undergo FUT surgery are scheduled for a follow-up appointment within 7-10 days for suture removal. Our competent office staff is always available to address any queries.

Following the hair transplant, some swelling might occur, which could extend to the forehead, eyelids, and even the cheeks. This swelling might lead to a slightly puffy appearance for a few days, but it’s a common and anticipated effect of the procedure, posing no cause for concern. The recipient areas will develop scabs and crusts around the grafts. Maintaining the graft areas clean and moist is crucial, and gentle hair washing can usually begin within one to two days. The scabs generally fall off within the initial week, revealing the transplanted follicles, which typically start growing within three months. Many patients opt for about a week off from in-person work post-surgery. Light exercise can resume after 7-10 days, while more strenuous activities and swimming should be postponed for 2-3 weeks.

Around 2-3 months after the transplant, the transplanted hair follicles usually begin to grow. Some patients might choose to employ medical treatments like topical minoxidil (Rogaine) or PRP injections to enhance graft growth and prevent further loss of non-transplanted hair around the area over time. Within 4-6 months, substantial improvement is usually noticeable, and the full impact of the transplant may take 12-18 months to become evident. The transplanted hair is your own and will continue to grow for life. You can cut, style, use products, swim, and engage in various activities just like with your natural hair.
