Once you start collecting quotes, you notice fast that the hair transplant price per graft can swing widely from one clinic to the next, and that some clinics never mention grafts at all. One office hands you a single package number, another lists a rate per graft, and a third adds a session fee you only spot on page two. Our hair transplant cost page for Miami lists our current rates. This guide explains the logic behind numbers like those, so you can read any quote with a clear head.
The short answer: the number of grafts in your plan does most of the work, the rate reflects the hands-on labor behind each graft, and the fine print decides whether two quotes are really comparable. At Nova Medical in Aventura, pricing runs $3.99 to $7.99 per graft with no session fees, and every quote is put in writing after a free consultation.
Per-Graft vs Flat-Rate Pricing: How Each Model Works
A graft is a follicular unit, the small natural cluster of one to four hairs that grows together from the same spot. With per-graft pricing, the clinic multiplies the grafts in your plan by a set rate. A plan of 2,000 grafts at $5 each comes to $10,000. The arithmetic is out in the open, and if the plan grows or shrinks, you can see exactly how the total moves.
Flat-rate pricing rolls everything into one figure, usually called a session or a package. Some patients like the simplicity. The problem is that a flat number says nothing about how much hair you are buying. Two clinics can each charge $9,000 for a day in the chair while one places 1,500 grafts and the other places 2,800.
Plenty of clinics mix the two. You may see a per-graft rate up to a certain count and a lower rate above it, or a base fee plus a per-graft charge. None of these models is wrong on its own. What matters is whether the graft count, the rate and every extra charge are written down before you commit.
| Pricing model | How the total is built | Question to ask |
| Per graft | Grafts placed multiplied by the rate | What happens if the final count lands above or below the estimate? |
| Flat rate or package | One price for the session | How many grafts are included, and is anything refunded if fewer are placed? |
| Tiered | Rate changes after a set number of grafts | Where are the tier breaks, and does the lower rate apply to the whole plan? |
| Base fee plus grafts | Facility or session fee, then a per-graft charge | Is the base fee charged again if you need a second session? |
What Drives Your Total Cost
The rate gets most of the attention, but the graft count usually moves the total far more. A small touch-up at the temples and a full rebuild of the front of the scalp are completely different projects, even at an identical rate.
How many grafts you need
Your graft count depends on how much area is thinning, how dense you want the result to look and how much donor hair you can spare. The ranges below are typical starting points, shown at an illustrative $5 per graft simply to make the math visible. Your own plan and rate come from the consultation.
| Treatment area | Typical grafts | Example at $5 per graft |
| Hairline refinement or temple points | 500 to 1,000 | $2,500 to $5,000 |
| Crown only | 1,000 to 2,000 | $5,000 to $10,000 |
| Front third of the scalp | 1,500 to 2,500 | $7,500 to $12,500 |
| Front and mid-scalp | 2,500 to 3,500 | $12,500 to $17,500 |
| Front, mid-scalp and crown | 4,000 or more, often over two sessions | Quoted per stage |
Your donor supply
Donor density sets a ceiling on what is possible. A dense donor area can supply more grafts in a single day, up to about 4,000 at our clinic, while a thinner one calls for a smaller, more careful plan. We never overharvest, and we leave a reserve for hair you may lose later. That reserve is one reason a reputable quote can come in lower than you expected, not higher. Our guide to why your donor area is finite explains the limits in more detail.
Technique and labor
Across the industry, FUE is often priced higher per graft than FUT, because each follicle is removed one at a time rather than taken out in a single strip. At Nova Medical, our surgical team extracts grafts by hand with fine handheld instruments, which is slow, focused work and a large part of what the rate pays for. You can read how that works on our FUE in Miami page. FUT and DHI-style placement are also available when they suit your hair better.
Hair character and medical oversight
Coarse, curly or wavy hair covers more scalp per graft, so some patients need fewer grafts for the look they want. Fine, straight hair may need more. Medical oversight matters too: at our clinic, Dr. Adam Rubinstein, MD FACS, a board-certified plastic surgeon, reviews and approves every plan and oversees each procedure. That level of physician involvement is built into what you pay.
Session Fees, Add-Ons and the Fine Print
A session fee is a fixed charge for each day of surgery, added on top of the grafts. It sounds minor until your plan needs two sessions and the fee shows up twice. Nova Medical does not charge session fees, so the graft count and the rate are what set the price.
Before you sign anywhere, ask how each of these is handled:
- Consultation: Is it free, and is any fee credited toward surgery?
- Pre-operative tests: Are bloodwork or other checks included or billed separately?
- Medications: Are pain relief and aftercare products part of the price?
- PRP and other extras: Are they optional, and what do they cost on their own? At our clinic, PRP is a separate treatment with its own quote.
- Follow-up: How many check-ins are included, and for how long? Our patients have 12 months of follow-up.
- Travel help: If you are coming from Broward, Palm Beach or out of state, is there any transportation support? We offer complimentary transportation to and from the clinic for patients who travel.
Watch for "unlimited grafts" deals: A package that promises as many grafts as you want for one price ignores the fact that everyone's donor area is limited. Taking too much can leave the back of the head looking thin, which is very hard to undo.
How to Compare Quotes Side by Side
Quotes only become comparable once you turn them into the same units. Here is a simple routine that works for any clinic, in South Florida or anywhere else:
- Get the graft count in writing: A quote without a number of grafts is not really a quote.
- Convert packages to a per-graft figure: Divide the package price by the grafts it includes.
- Add every fee: Session fees, tests, medications and second-session charges all belong in the total.
- Ask who does what: Find out which steps the physician handles, which the team handles and who reviews your plan.
- Ask about your donor plan: Good clinics will tell you how many grafts they plan to leave in reserve.
- Compare totals, not rates: The lowest rate can still produce the highest bill.
Here is how that plays out. Say Clinic A quotes $8,000 for "one session" with no graft count. Clinic B quotes 2,000 grafts at $4.50 plus a $750 session fee, which is $9,750, or about $4.88 per graft once the fee is included. Clinic C quotes 1,800 grafts at $5.25 with no extra fees, which is $9,450. Clinic A looks cheapest, but until it names a graft count, you cannot know what you are getting. If its session turns out to be 1,200 grafts, the real figure is about $6.67 per graft.
Why the Lowest Rate Is Not Always the Lowest Cost
A low rate is only a good deal if the grafts survive, sit at natural angles and come from a donor area that is still healthy afterward. When those things go wrong, the repair work later can cost more than the original procedure, and some donor damage cannot be fixed at all.
Travel adds hidden costs too. Flights, hotels and time off work can quickly close the gap between a bargain overseas and a local clinic, and follow-up care becomes difficult once you are home. Our article on the real cost of going to Turkey walks through those trade-offs honestly.
A fair price is one where you understand what you are paying for: a realistic graft count, careful extraction, a protected donor area and a team that will still answer your calls months later when the new hair starts to grow.
Financing and Paying for Your Procedure
Because hair restoration is cosmetic, health insurance usually does not cover it, so most patients pay out of pocket or finance part of the cost. We offer 0% financing for the first 12 months. A $9,000 plan spread over that year works out to $750 a month, with no interest if it is paid off within the promotional period.
A few practical tips help financing stay painless. Pick a payment you can comfortably make every month, aim to clear the balance before the 0% window closes, and ask for the financing terms in writing alongside your quote. If a two-stage plan makes sense for you, the second stage can be planned and budgeted separately once you see how the first one grows in.
